A career in the Indian Army Medical Corps

Dr Rajput’s professional path is rooted in the Indian Army Medical Corps. He was commissioned shortly after completing his MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College in 1978 and trained in respiratory medicine at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute and Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi.

Across his service he taught and treated at Army Hospital (R&R), one of the country’s senior teaching military hospitals, where he eventually served as Professor & Head, Respiratory Medicine. He was a senior advisor and professor (Medicine) for Delhi University and Pune University in this period, and was also responsible for guiding postgraduate examination and thesis work in respiratory medicine.

He was awarded the Maj Gen Amir Chand Award (1988) for an AFMRC research paper on serological markers in acute viral hepatitis. He received commendations from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), and the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) during his service. He retired with the rank of Brigadier.

The framing of his approach to patient care — careful clinical examination, structured documentation, and steady, transparent communication — owes a great deal to military medical training. He continues to apply that approach in civilian outpatient and procedural pulmonology.
